“It is unimaginable that we are currently battling the censoring, mitigating and removal altogether of Black stories and culture in the public and private domain. I’m glad that Cain has chosen to document her story. It is primarily a happy one. We need those too.” – Saundra A. Heath
“HOME” includes over 35 framed artworks available for sale through the galleries. Every work tells a story that reflects traditions and values of an empowering and aspirational small-town deep South Black community.
Cain’s works radiate her pride and joy in being a product of small-town Southern upbringing and her determination to safeguard cultural memory. She describes her style of artwork as “memory paintings” and her many academic and work achievements as ornaments on a Christmas tree.
“Cain’s figurative art is characterized by vibrant color, pastoral settings and stylized depictions of the human form that draw on the rich history of folk art from the South. Her collage works by contrast are more muted, and feature vintage black and white photos and a color palette that reflects the rich and earthy colors acquainted with the deep South,” states Bonds.
Cain is currently Assoc. Vice President of Faculty Affairs and Development for the University of Texas Health Science Center and Associate Dean for Professional Development at the UTHealth Houston School of Dentistry. In 2022 she was named a recipient of the Univ. of Mississippi Medical Center’s Lifetime Achievement Award for significant contributions in improving health outcomes in diverse communities.
She has exhibited nationally and counts Viola Davis amongst her high-profile art collectors.
HOME is free and open to the general public.
